Main traditions and customs
Protection of the harvest. Tryphon's Day symbolizes the beginning of spring work in the fields. On this day, farmers traditionally pray to Saint Tryphon for the protection of the harvest and the fertility of the land.
Vineyard cultivation. This holiday is especially significant for winemakers. It was believed that if the vines were pruned on Tryphon's Day, this would ensure a good grape harvest.
Rituals with animals. In some regions, rituals were performed to protect livestock. For example, animals could be sprinkled with holy water so that they would be healthy and fertile.
Festive treats. On this day, various meat dishes were often cooked on the tables, especially pork. It was also customary to cook pancakes and pies.
Folk festivities. In some areas, mass festivities were held with songs, dances and games. People gathered together to celebrate the arrival of spring.
